A SHINING STAR, RACHEL Posted in DA Dateline 7/31/2019

​We want to congratulate our very own Rachel ‘20 for being selected to represent Colorado at the International Thespian Festival. While there, she was able to attend workshops and perform her individual event in front of judges for feedback. Rachel also participated in college auditions. 
“The callbacks were all very positive, one college went as far to say they have a spot for her, “ shared her mom, Valerie. “I have already been getting phone calls from those colleges, following up on whether she has an interest in applying. Even if they aren’t her top choices, she is elated colleges have an interest in her!” 
We love seeing our students find their passion while at Denver Academy, and are thrilled for the many opportunities Rachel has in the future with theatre. 

Rachel, Allie, Rachel, Jenn, Hallie, Sydney, Ellie, Jaye, and Patrick performed at the Denver Academy Gala. They sang "A Million Dreams" and they did such an amazing job! I am so proud of everyone's hard work. Way to go! Ya'll looked snazzy too. Thank you for sharing your talent. 

We sure do have a lot of talent at DA! Especially within our theatre department. Ella sang and played the guitar to her very own original written song! Rachel sang her competition piece that she is taking to Nationals this summer. And we had a lot of laughs with our Improv performance. Thank you, Jolene Gutierrez, for organizing such a great event for Denver Academy.

I would love to have you audition for our fall play: Eurydice by Sarah Ruhl.

What: Auditions for Eurydice by Sarah Ruhl!
When: Wednesday, September 12, 3:30pm in the theatre
What to prepare: 1-minute monologue, memorized and well-prepared

***SENIORS: This is during your senior retreat! So please schedule another time to audition before September 12.***

TECH: If you are interested in Tech (lights, sound, stage crew, etc.) please come see me or grab a safety contract from the call board to sign up! Tech will start coming to rehearsals in October.


Synopsis:
Sarah Ruhl reimagines the classic myth of Orpheus through the eyes of its heroine. Dying too young on her wedding day, Eurydice must journey to the underworld, where she reunites with her father and struggles to remember her lost love. With contemporary characters, ingenious plot twists, and breathtaking visual effects, the play is a fresh look at a timeless, tragic love story.


Other important info:

• Performances are November 8, 9, 10 at 7pm 
• Expect rehearsals to be every day, after school from 3:30pm-6:30pm starting September 17 in the theatre, except for Thursdays for Theatre Club.
• There will be an all-day rehearsal, Saturday, November 3.
• You are only allowed 2 excused missed rehearsals.
• Must be academically eligible to perform in shows (C- or above)

I will also be passing out a calendar with rehearsal dates and times at the audition so that students can figure out if they have any conflicts.

Two of our students were able to attend Berridge Theatre Program this summer! Berridge brings young artists from around the world together with professional actors, directors, producers, choreographers, writers and filmmakers to study the craft of acting and filmmaking in the extraordinary setting of Chateau le Mont Epinguet in Normandy, France.

One student expressed,"It’s an “acting”  program but it isn’t. It’s a life program. It’s like
they give you this place that truly radiates love, kindness,
creativity, and family and label it an acting program when really it
should be called. “Berridge the program for wanting to know the
feeling of pure happiness. Oh! And you are amazing at acting and want
to get better? Perfect ...come here!"

I am so glad these students learned so much and that they can bring their new skills back to DA and share what they learned. What an awesome way to spend a summer!

The Lighting Design Class is at it again. Each student designed their own lights and projections to some of their favorite music. This year they even stepped up on their costume design (Rock and Roll Scientists?). Thanks for another great quarter!
