Denver Academy’s Thespian troupe annually attends the Colorado State Thespian Conference in downtown Denver at the Colorado Convention Center. This year's festival was full of fun workshops and shows. Our Thespian Troupe was awarded Gold Level Honor Troupe status! Congratulations to Jenn, Rachel, Patrick, Noah, Sami, and Rachel on their competition pieces! And a special congratulations to Patrick and Noah who qualified for Nationals! I would love for you to audition to be a part of the musical this year. Rehearsals start after school in January and the performances are March 12, 13, 14th.
WHEN AND WHERE: Auditions for our spring musical: The Unsinkable Molly Brown will be December 5, Thursday in the theatre starting at 3:30pm. WHAT TO PREPARE: Please prepare a one-minute song. Find a karaoke youtube version of your song (or any mp3 that doesn't have vocals) on your phone or device. SYNOPSIS: Miners, brawls, pretty girls, love, romance, maritime disasters and Meredith Willson's music and lyrics – The Unsinkable Molly Brown is the rags-to-riches love story of Molly and Leadville Johnny Brown, owners of the richest mine in the U.S. at the turn of the twentieth century. A comedic, yet honest, commentary on the classes and the human spirit of the Colorado settlers, this grand musical is a tour de force with rousing and sentimental songs, as well as dances that are reminiscent of the times. This spirited tale of a legendary, real-life American original follows the exploits of Molly Brown, whose feisty determination to rise above her impoverished beginnings leads her from the backwoods of Hannibal, Missouri, to the palaces of Europe. Along the way, she marries a lucky prospector, enters the highest echelons of Monte Carlo society, survives the sinking of the Titanic and, most importantly, earns the approval that she so desperately seeks from those "Beautiful People of Denver." Funny, light, uplifting and uniquely American, The Unsinkable Molly Brown charmed Broadway and film audiences with its irresistible, outrageous title role, in the tradition of such unforgettable characters as Auntie Mame, Dolly Levi and Mama Rose, as well as Meredith Willson's rousing score, in the tradition of his immortal The Music Man. CHARACTERS: Come see a full cast description on the call board in the theatre If you are interested in tech, please come see me in the theatre to get a contract! Rachel performed a beautiful song for (In)Sight Colab Theatre Company (aka Theatre Esprit Asia) to help raise money for their new year of theatre. This theatre spotlights inclusive, innovative, and inspiring works to illuminate our shared human experience. Congratulations, Rachel, on an amazing performance!
Director's Note: I am very excited to present a play written by a strong woman, about strong women. Although this play is set in the 1920s, I find Radium Girls holds lessons and truths that apply to today’s world. This play is about standing up for what you believe is right, even when you might be standing alone. Grace shows that even against all odds, each one of us can make the world a better place. D.W. Gregory has written a play that shows the heart breaks, betrayals, losses, and joys of life and how those moments walk hand-in-hand to create a beautiful existence.
This art form, called theatre, brings us all together. The audience, cast, and crew are such an important part of what makes theatre special. So to each and everyone of you: I am very grateful and want to express a very warm thank you to our community for your support of Denver Academy Theatre and theatre education. I thank the students for being part of the process of making theatre, and for your bravery and for your passion. It is a privilege to work with you. Congratulations, cast and crew, on a lovely show! Senior honor students attended Beowulf on the Rocks where they wrote and performed their own Beowulf-inspired scripts for their classmates at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, complete with costumes and props! A SHINING STAR, RACHEL Posted in DA Dateline 7/31/2019
We want to congratulate our very own Rachel ‘20 for being selected to represent Colorado at the International Thespian Festival. While there, she was able to attend workshops and perform her individual event in front of judges for feedback. Rachel also participated in college auditions. “The callbacks were all very positive, one college went as far to say they have a spot for her, “ shared her mom, Valerie. “I have already been getting phone calls from those colleges, following up on whether she has an interest in applying. Even if they aren’t her top choices, she is elated colleges have an interest in her!” We love seeing our students find their passion while at Denver Academy, and are thrilled for the many opportunities Rachel has in the future with theatre. Rachel, Allie, Rachel, Jenn, Hallie, Sydney, Ellie, Jaye, and Patrick performed at the Denver Academy Gala. They sang "A Million Dreams" and they did such an amazing job! I am so proud of everyone's hard work. Way to go! Ya'll looked snazzy too. Thank you for sharing your talent.
We sure do have a lot of talent at DA! Especially within our theatre department. Ella sang and played the guitar to her very own original written song! Rachel sang her competition piece that she is taking to Nationals this summer. And we had a lot of laughs with our Improv performance. Thank you, Jolene Gutierrez, for organizing such a great event for Denver Academy.
The Lighting Design Class is at it again. Each student designed their own lights and projections to some of their favorite music. Rock on. Thanks for another great quarter! |
